AES002 Movie Review (The Day The Earth Stood Still) 2008

This is just the thing that I always do while doing my ironing. I watch movies, mostly from Disney Hotstar, because my monthly Telkomsel package does include a "free" membership of Disney Hotstar.

So... Today's movie is about an apocalyptic event that's about to happen to the human species in present days (before covid of course).   This movie is a loose adaptation of the 1951 movie of the same name.

Overall I do like the story and the moral it tries to deliver, that human being is a race that capable of change and evolve, especially in time of destruction.

The story revolves around a single mother Helen Benson (Jennifer Connely) who works as a scientist with her stepson Jacob (Jaden Smith), they have a rough connection from the beginning of the movie. They both have unresolved grieve inside because of the loss of Helen's husband / Jacob's father in a war.

So they will eventually meet with Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) the alien that arrives "to save the earth".  Of course, Helen and all the scientists never have guessed before that Klaatu's idea of saving the earth is by the elimination of the human race.

After their journey through ordeals together, Helen and Jacob can overcome their differences and start to understand and forgive each other.  Klaatu then change his mind and decided it was worth it to give humankind another chance.  So the story ends there.

Soooo... I think there's a lot of things you can learn from this movie. This movie shows you a human ugly side but also the willingness to change and become a better version of ourselves. I like the idea of that, it gives you hope for the future of humankind. Really... We do need that a lot in this era of uncertainty.

I really wish we can overcome this global pandemic soon and take better care of our only home before an alien decided to come and wipe out all of the human race to save the earth from us.
