AES09 Catcalls are not compliments
Complimenting someone and catcalling someone are 2 different things. Compliments are supposed to boost someone’s confidence, meanwhile, a catcall just makes the person feel uncomfortable and unsafe. Compliments are personalized, catcalls are sexualized. Here are some examples of compliments, “I love your dress”, “I like your hair”, “Your outfit looks so good”. Meanwhile, catcall sounds more like, “Hey, babe, I like the way those pants make your butt look.” Maybe it’s not a big deal if it’s coming from your best friend, but some random dude on the street?
Catcalls are literally sexualizing a person. What's sad about this is that the people that catcalls won't admit that they catcall, they always say that their catcalls are compliments. And I hate when people justify men that catcall women. By saying “boys will be boys” or something like that. They say that it’s normal to have a sexual desire. Yes, it's normal to have a sexual desire, but have to know how to control your sexual desire. Like you can have a sexual turn-on when you see a girl in the mall, it's out of your control. BUT, what comes out of your mouth and your actions are something that you can control.
And if you think catcalls are flirting, no it's not. Catcall is a sexual assault. Flirting assumes equality and has an element of playfulness while catcalling or harassment is intended to demean and dominate the other person. Flirting most often happens one-on-one, while catcalling often involves a group of men and a single woman.
No form of sexual assault should be normalized.
