AES33 Saviour Syndrome/Complex

Saskia Electrapenulis arsip2

Have you ever been in a relationship where your guy keeps implying that he’s your knight in shining armor, who has made this grand entry into your life, so he could save you from all the evils of the world? Well, guess what? Your man could quite possibly have what is known as  ‘Saviour Syndrome!’

Saviour syndrome also has many other names, some people call it the Edward Cullen effect. Because having a guy who controlling or emotionally unstable is ‘hot’. Or I like to call it the prince charming complex because well growing up the idea of a good fairy tale is when there’s a weak princess and the strong prince helps her and for some reason, they almost always end up getting married.

As you’ve probably noticed, the stereotypical perception of savior complex/syndrome is ridiculously gendered, with men ready to do the saving and women supposedly wanting to be saved.  In reality, any individual or relationship can have a savior complex, regardless of your gender or your partner’s gender.

But why do men specifically have issues with this savior complex? Well, this is thought from a very young age. Notice how parents will always tell little boys to not cry, and their parents tell them “you shouldn’t cry, you’re a strong boy. Don’t act like a girl”. And the parent or anyone I guess will tell boys to help girls, even tho the girl doesn’t need help. Like it’s annoying, to be honest, I get it my guy friend is trying to help me. But the way they’re trying to help me is to validate them that they’re strong or stronger than me.

The perception of men is stronger than women are also thought to young boys. This is when they develop their savior complex. They can’t express their emotions, they are thought to always be strong, and they are thought to help women because women are weak. There you go, now that young boy grows up to be a man with a savior complex.

Saviour complex is also closely related to toxic masculinity. And this really needs to stop, because the savior complex is toxic for the person itself and for people around them. Especially savior complex in men, I really feel bad for them because of how they have to take all of these toxic ideologies.

Let’s tell boys that it’s okay to be tired, to not always be the hero. It’s okay if you are the one that needs a savior. It isn’t shameful if a woman that’s saving you.
