AES37 Little Women

Saskia Electrapenulis arsip2

In the years after the Civil War, Jo March lives in New York and makes her living as a writer, while her sister Amy studies painting in Paris. Amy has a chance encounter with Theodore, a childhood crush who proposed to Jo but was ultimately rejected. Their oldest sibling, Meg, is married to a schoolteacher, while shy sister Beth develops a devastating illness that brings the family back together.

Why do I love this movie? It’s actually just about Jo I would say. I see myself as Jo, I can relate to many things that Jo went through in her life. She is a hard-working woman, she’s ambitious, she’s incredibly smart. Jo also doesn’t show interest in having a romantic relationship/marriage. She isn’t scared to challenge things in her society. She’s the oldest sibling, and she is responsible for almost everything in her household. She also has serious anger issues, and she most of the time regrets the things she says when she is mad.

Jo had a friend named Laurie, they were neighbors and they became very close. Laurie also was close with Jo’s sisters Meg, Beth, and Amy. Laurie always had romantic feelings towards Jo. But once Laurie told Jo about his feelings, Jo didn’t feel the same way. Of course, Jo loved Lourie but not in a romantic way, and Jo doesn’t see how they would work in a relationship/marriage. “Im sorry I can’t love you the way that you want to”

Jo quit her job in New York because her sister Beth was developing a devastating illness. What happened to Beth actually brings the family together. Jo and Meg came to take care of her, as well as her aunt. But Amy didn’t come back, she was too busy living her life painting in Europe with aunt March. Jo never had a good relationship with Amy, because Amy was just jealous and she didn’t like what Jo was doing. Once she even burned Jo’s writing.

Jo kept writing while looking after Beth, Beth told Jo to write. Because her ill sister was the one asking then so couldn’t say no. One day, Beth passed away due to her illness. Now Amy came back, with Lourie. They were married, Amy always liked Lourie. Amy didn’t want to feel like she had a second option just because Lourie got rejected by Jo.

At the same time, Jo realized that she actually loves Lourie, and she wants to make this work. Because she is lonely, she wants someone to be with her. But she was surprised to see Amy being Married to Lourie. But Lourie told Jo that he loves Amy but never the same way he loves Jo and that he will always love Jo.

AES176 Perfect Days: Bagaimana Cara Mencintai Kesederhanaan?

Baru-baru ini aku nonton Perfect Days karya Wim Wenders, dan rasanya langsung nyambung banget sama pengalaman nonton Taste of Cherry dari Abbas Kiarostami. Keduanya bisa dibilang “slow cinema” murni, tapi punya rasa yang kontras meski sama-sama minimalis. Taste of Cherry terasa lebih gelap dan filo…

AES879 Menyadari Perangkap Ilusi

Kalau bicara the Matrix, ingetnya bang Keanu yang emang aktingnya epic banget di serial filem The Matrix. Dulu mungkin kita lihat sebatas hiburan, tapi ternyata makin ke sini banyak yang bilang bahwa filem The Matrix ini adalah bukan semata filem fiksi, tapi sesungguhnya sebuah dokumenter. Menarik.…
