AES39 The Negative Stigma of Divorced and Single Women

15 years of my life I have seen so many amazing, smart, and beautiful divorced or just single women but it breaks my heart how our society mistreats them. Let’s talk about divorced women first. The way society treats divorced women, especially Indonesian society is just so wrong. I see many married women see a divorced woman as a thread, people assume divorced women are just going to flirt with married men. Especially when she is still young and beautiful. 

That’s just how women see a divorced woman, but how men see them is worse. Some men think that divorced women are just these lonely and weak beings (which come from the assumption that women need a man to be strong), a soul that they can just use for their personal advantage. They are also seen as this used item, therefore they have less worth compared to married women. 

Now let’s talk about women who choose to be single. In this contest just imagine there’s a woman in her late 30s and she decides that she doesn’t want to get married. I can just imagine the judgment that will come towards her is going to be insane. I feel like the stigma of a “perawan tua” is actually still common in Indonesian society, even tho like hello it’s 2021. 

I just feel like women deserve better, especially Indonesian women because these things are just simply cruel. I just know that the world would be a better place, Indonesia would be a better place if we just let divorced and single women live their lives. I believe that a woman can be divorced and single and it doesn’t change the fact that they are worthy and they are valuable as a human being.
