AES49 Everyone should be a feminist!

First of all let’s learn, what is feminism and what does it mean to be a feminist. At its core, feminism is the belief in full social, economic, and political equality for women. Feminism largely arose in response to Western traditions that restricted the rights of women, but feminist thought has global manifestations and variations. So being a feminist basically means you support the equality of men and women. Well, not just men and women, me as a feminist I believe that everyone deserves equal right regardless of their gender, race, and sexuality.

The patriarchy is so toxic for everyone, for both men and women. One of the most negative aspects of the patriarchal norms of masculinity is the tendency for men to constantly be in competition with each other. Almost every aspect of many men’s lives is shrouded by the need to see themselves as better than other men, or other people in general.

It’s a much different story in the world of feminism. Feminists are much more interested in creating a space that feels safe and comfortable for as many people as possible. This can be beneficial for many men who have trouble simply accepting others in their lives without feeling the need to be better than them. Because life isn’t a competition, everyone has their own life and prosses and we should respect and support others, not start unnecessary competitions.

Supporting feminism also means you are breaking gender stereotypes and unrealistic definitions of both men and women. It breaks my heart when I hear little kids saying that boys and stronger than girls, or when parents shame their sons for crying. The patriarchy is damaging everyone. No matter what gender you are, how old you are it affects everyone. But it has more negative impacts on women, and we don’t want that.

I know every single one of us knows a woman in our life, and by being a feminist and challenging the patriarchy we can help to build a better future. A better future for women, men, for everyone. We can make a better world, but we need to work together. You can start small, you can support and empower women around you. You can be a judgemental free zone for your guy friend, a place where he can let out his emotions. You can try to educate your family and friends about feminism. There are so many first steps that you can try. Start small, start now!

I am proud to be a feminist!
