AES66 Women, Physical Appearance, and Beauty

Throughout my life, I’ve always heard people especially men say that women only care about their physical appearance and they assume a good-looking woman couldn’t possibly have a brain. But why do most women care so much about how they look, well the answer is very simple. It’s because young girls, most of the time people only compliment about how they look. It just makes sense that when they grow up they will try to look their best to get validation. 

When I was a little girl I like to go to the bookstore, and they have this section of magazines. But the funny thing was the girl’s magazine was always pink and the boys were always blue. That’s not even the worse part, the content of girl’s magazines is like 90% about how to look the best. But in the boy’s magazine, it’s filled with science and cars things that are intellectual. 

I hate the stigma that good look women can’t be smart, that’s totally not true. A film that made me realize this was legally blonde. If you haven’t seen legally blonde it’s basically a film about Elle Woods who is a high fashion woman, and she’s dating a guy named Wanner. But then they broke up because Wanner said that Elle wasn’t enough for him, in a way that Elle isnt intellectual. So Elle went to Harvard law school, she got in. People were surprised that someone like Elle would get into Harvard law. She got into Harvard law to be enough for Wanner. But then she changed her motivation, she did law for herself. She graduated, even became one of the best students. She became a high-fashion smart woman. 

Elle woods also breaks the stigma of the “dumb blonde”. If you don’t know what that means “dumb blonde” is a stereotype of a blond-haired woman perceived in a stereotypical way as being attractive but unintelligent. One of the examples of the “dumb blonde” stereotype is Marilyn Monroe. Almost in every role, she got she always appears to be this clueless beautiful woman. Altho I have to admit she is a very beautiful woman, but it doesn’t make her an uneducated woman. Not many people know that Marilyn Monroe went to university and graduated. She went to the University of California, LA and she studied art and literature. 

So I think we should try to appreciate the little girl’s intellectual views, so she won’t rely on her self-worth on the way she looks. Compliment little girls for the way they think, not just for the way they look. They need a balance of appreciation on both. And also to redefine beauty, tell little girls that beauty is inside out.
