AES87 The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Today Im going to talk about one of my best reads in 2021. And that is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by American author Taylor Jenkins Reid. The novel tells the story of the fictional Old Hollywood star Evelyn Hugo, who at the age of 79 decides to give a final interview to an unknown journalist, Monique Grant. According to Reid, Evelyn Hugo was loosely based in part on actresses Elizabeth Taylor.

The writing in this book is just genius, I finished this book faster than any other books I’ve read this year. Because Im obsessed with Old Hollywood, celebrity culture, and I am in love with the entertainment industry. I love all of the characters and how the author builds up their personality, you can tell that those characters are really from the Old Hollywood era. 

After reading this I have this new definition of love in my head because the love story in this book is so complex but I love it. The complexity of it makes this book so accurate and relatable. As human beings, we usually can experience more than one emotion at the same time. 

Most authors try to make their main character the good one, they make this black and white area between the characters. But that’s again unrealistic, humans make mistakes, and it’s good if the main character can admit their mistakes. It makes me feel better about myself because even Evelyn Hugo that in this story is an incredibly talented, beautiful, and successful actress. She makes mistakes, and she makes the wrong choices. I just love how Taylor Jenkins Reid show’s the character of Evelyn, both as a successful A-class celebrity, but also as Evelyn the human being that just wants to be loved. 

This book is rated for 15+. So for anyone here that is 15 or above would recommend this book. It’s trending on TikTok and I completely understand what the hype is all about.
