AES90 First Wave Feminism
The first wave in the late 19th-century was not the first appearance of feminist ideals, but it was the first real political movement for the Western world. In 1792, Mary Wollstonecraft published the revolutionary Vindication of the Rights of Woman. In 1848, about 200 women met in a church. They came up with 12 resolutions asking for specific rights, such as the right to vote. Reproductive rights also became an important issue for early feminists. After years of feminist activism, Congress finally passed the 19th amendment in 1920 and gave women the vote. This was almost 30 years after New Zealand became the first country where women could vote.
The main goal was simple, they were trying to make society recognize that women are human beings that deserve human rights because at the time women were treated as property. As I was doing my research about first-wave feminism, it reminds me of the film little women. The story of little women is set in the 1860s, it’s still in the same time setting as the married women's property act of 1848. In the film, Amy has this monologue that really describes the situation at that exact moment.
This is Amy’s monologue “ Well. I'm not a poet, I'm just a woman. And as a woman, I have no way to make money, not enough to earn a living and support my family. Even if I had my own money, which I don't, it would belong to my husband the minute we were married. If we had children they would belong to him, not me. They would be his property. At this time feminism/women’s rights movements were only focused on white women’s rights (more specifically their rights to own their money and their right to vote). As we all know at that time period colorism and racism is a big issue, so people of colour especially women of colour were just not getting their rights.
