AES88 The Importance of Acknowledging Women History in Education

There's something that I have acknowledged for some time now, is the bad representation of women in our education. Of course, we all know about Albert Einstein or maybe Thomas Alva Edison,  and I'm sure that you have heard about Shakespeare in one of your English classes. It just makes me so sad how so many brilliant women inventors, authors, and scientists are not mentioned in any of our classes. Even if they mention those women they never give the full frame of them. 

It has been common knowledge that everyone knows about Christopher Columbus the guy that discovered America. But it surprised me how not many people know Mary Wollstonecraft the author of the book ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Women’ which is known to be one of the earliest feminist literature to exist. I think that the discovery of America is as important as a woman expressing her opinion about her basic human rights. 

What I'm trying to say are representation matters. When these young children are thought about as strong, bold, talented, and smart women figures throughout history it inspires them. If we want a future In which women and girls are valued and celebrated,  we need to look back into our past and see how other women have stood before us and fought for the life that we live today. It’s the same analogy as to how we study how we were colonized and we learned about the figures that fought for Indonesia. Therefore we respect those figures and they become our heroes and inspiration.  

I'm just saying without Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, RA Kartini, Mary Wollstonecraft,  and so many other women from the past I wouldn't be the woman I am today. They have inspired me to write, to believe in equality. So I hope in the close future, we can have more women representation in our education, because it makes a big difference.
