AES93 Betty Friedan

Saskia Electrapenulis arsip2

First of all rest in peace to Betty Freidan, she passed away at the age of 85 from congestive heart failure in 2006. Betty Friedan is a journalist, activist, and co-founder of the National Organization for women. She is also known for being one of the leaders of the women’s rights movement in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Feminine Mystique was her best-selling book, that book gave voice to millions of American Women’s frustration of limited gender roles. The Feminine Mystique became an instant best-seller and became one of the most influential nonfiction books of the 20th century, such an achievement.

Betty wanted women to have greater and bigger roles in the political field, because obviously representation matters. She helped to create the National Women’s Political Caucus in 1971.  She is remembered as one of the feminist icons of the 20th century. Her work and the things that she fought for are still carried today by her writing and the three organizations she helped establish.

I am amazed by how much Betty has done with 85 years of her life, her books are definitely on my wish list. It’s kinda hard to find books that are written in the 60s or 70s. I am on a constant adventure to search for feminist classic books. I haven’t even read any of Betty’s books but I am just over the top obsessed with the idea of her as a person. Manifesting to be a revolutionary feminist icon just like her, and I think that’s what she would want me to be.

“Who knows what women can be when they are finally free to be themselves.”

-Betty Friedan
