AES16 Covid, Friends, and Privilege

Saskia Electrapenulis arsip2

After about 1 year after the pandemic started, I have a new perception about almost everyone. And now I can see someone’s personality from how they respond to covid. Well, it’s not a secret that I have serious trust issues, and now it got worst because of covid. I lost respect for people that don’t take covid seriously, it’s a literal deadly virus. At these moments Im kinda thankful for my anxiety, at least it’s keeping me safe because Im too scared to go out.

Okay back to the topic, some of my friends are literally going on holiday in the middle of PPKM. And the worst part is they go in big groups, and they don’t use their mask, and they post their holiday on social media. Things like that make me feel so unsafe, and I will be avoiding them in real life. Because I know very well that, that’s such a selfish thing to do, it’s like you don’t respect people who get affected by the pandemic the most.

They always say “But Im stressed”, like hey same, Im also stressed. But that doesn’t justify your actions. I know very well what it feels like to be stress, but health care workers are risking their lives out there, and I feel like it’s disrespectful for us to say that were stressed. Most of my friends are in the middle and upper economy class, and that’s a privilege in this pandemic situation. We should learn to use our privilege wisely, by for example not going out for unnecessary things. It’s basically for your safety, to protect you and your loved ones. I don’t understand how those people think, it’s so scary that someone can get to that level of being selfish. And they’re usually above the age of 17, I thought they should be mature enough to know what’s necessary and what isn’t.

I just hope everyone that’s reading this, please follow the rules, only go out if it’s necessary, stay healthy, wear your mask. This pandemic isn’t gonna end by its self, we need to take part in the solution. Know your privilege, and help less privileged people. I love giving some extra cash for my Gojek, calling my friends to just talk, and checking on family members. The small things matter in this situation.
